The Kankakee County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division consists of one hundred and twenty one corrections officers, 2 commissary clerks, 4 part-time medical doctors, 1 full-time nurse and 3 part-time nurses. The Corrections Division is mainly responsible for the jail facility and inmate processing.
Construction for our new facility is complete, and was officially opened on February 11, 2005. The new facility, the Jerome Combs Detention Center, is designed to hold 312 inmates. Our old jail facility, the Kankakee County Detention Center, was designed for 106 inmates, but in 1994 was double-bunked which increased the capacity to 220. In 2003 a work release dorm was completed and the capacity increased again to 244. The average daily census for 2009 for both the old and new jail was 585.85 inmates.
The jail is comprised of separate cell blocks for felony and misdemeanors but houses a mixture of low to high risk security inmates.
